My supervisor is among first Jewish people I meet in life without a gun.He is open minded and well informed about my own history.I learnt a lot from him and with him, I could fully express my political views and I am glad he did the same; online pharmacy viagra. We went together to Herzl grave here in Vienna – online pharmacy viagra. We discussed Sigmund Freud theories as well as outstanding Bruno Kreisky political position and PLO personnel and key topics; online pharmacy viagra. He is also trying to learn Arabic; online pharmacy viagra. So online pharmacy viagra, it was a good German- Arabic chat attempt but it turned often into English.

My initial thoughts about my research topic were related to Palestine governance but I made a pleasant compromise.I decided to research on new emerging phenomena of concern for Austria- Europe and Palestine- Middle East, namely, Islamophopia and the EU policy; online pharmacy viagra.

Due to much controversial cultural nature of the phenomena, it is critical to highlight points of conflict but also cooperation in policy making along with grounded philosophies. One advantage is that a research of that kind has a potential to be embodied in a larger project later on; online pharmacy viagra. One disadvantage is though a restricted budget for scholars limiting field study for example to one’s home country only.In my case online pharmacy viagra, it is critical to view EU policy makers in Brussels. It is unfortunate I can not afford it.

I started to see Islamophopia from an interesting point of view especially when some of my colleges deny its existence at all.

Further, when citing its presence in Europe, some suggest in more or less friendly way to never refer to it explicitly in the interviews but also in the dissertation regardless the qualifying made to its definition and manifestations – online pharmacy viagra. The lesson learnt is that I have to be more sensitive to everyone’s experience as much as I can in a contextual setting and learn how to ask questions instead of giving answers.I demand the same for loosing interest in the process is a challenge and can be a miss- opportunity.Sometimes, I find it awkward when someone including professors asks only me among other students when presenting our projects about my “Western” sources of information and authors in a way perceived as vilification of critics and opponents and further credibility or at times projecting on me a pro- Palestinian approach whatever that means – online pharmacy viagra. It mattered less if Palestinians within themselves view things differently and where I am concerned of large scale of views that are not limited by nationality, religion, race or gender as personal commitment to openness and respect as well as appreciation to our differences and continue dialogue rather than placing opposing voices beyond reason and dialogue.

Yet in the north south dialogue or more precisely Austria- Palestine dialogue, it become clearer in time that Israel is also in/ explicitly there; online pharmacy viagra.Further, in school, there is sometimes confusion between anti- Semitism and criticizing Israel policies. For many, they mix the two into one – online pharmacy viagra. My supervisor has extensively written about that – online pharmacy viagra.I am attempting to take his steps, interestingly, as a Palestinian with a hope my experience will be revealed in the process – online pharmacy viagra. It has been uneasy task; online pharmacy viagra. However, I am glad I have the opportunity to state it out.

ohh, I did not notice this part (2) before. i am now even more interested in your topic fida about Islamophobia. you are addressing it along the EU policy which is extremely difficult to capture, isn’t it?

Yes indeed. The term Islamophobia is a contested one in spite of attempts to identify it by the UN, CoE and Int. NGOs as concerned. However, within Europe, policy responses risk being based not on the promotion of equality and fundamental rights, but on the prevention of terrorism (Muslims in Europe therefore, become double victims of terror attacks and then of policy responses to those attacks).
In the case of Palestine, reasons to engage with Hamas are controversial. The question is how the EU credibly promotes democracy and human rights in Palestine if Islamists are not engaged. to that point, the EU foreign policy and war on terror is widely perceived as anti- Islam policy. This anti Islam perception is often reasoned by, the EU unconditional support to autocratic regimes threatened by the rise of Islamic movements, procrastination over Turkey request for accession, and most forcefully raised, the EU boycott policy against elected Hamas government. (Islamophobia, is it? If so, what are the conditions for Islamophobia impact on the EU policy making? It is essential to explore formulated EU boycott policy of elected Hamas in OPT in 2006, in an attempt uncover, understand and explain Islamophobia impact in articulation with key factors and actors). Again, it is uneasy task (for the EU itself is a complex composition of the EU member states as well as Islamic movements vary to high extent, a single EU policy line is impossible) but it is a vital one. In doing so, it is essential to narrow the scope and examine Islamophobia impact on the EU policy towards one single context. In this the EU boycott policy of elected Hamas by Palestinians under occupation in 2006 election. policy documents, statements and related media at time of election will be examined as well as comparative interviews on this matter.

do you think gender matters with regard to Islamophbia. well, i am asking since you are a female Palestinian yourself and studying in Europe in the moment?

It does. In relation to women as pointed out in your question -Laila, Muslim women are often singled out as victims of oppression and discrimination attributed to Islam rather than a particular cultural practice seeking to subordinate women. Nevertheless, to consider all Muslim women as passive victims is not an accurate reflection for how Muslim women see their lives. In other words to focus on negative issues such as forced marriages and honor killings without denying that they exist, is only to scratch the surface of Muslim women’s diverse experiences across Europe. On the other hand, it is worth to note Muslim women developing responses such as Ni Putes, Ni Soumises in France and help line founded in Britian.

What about the headscarf? is that right to deny women to practice Islam the way they choose? what about those students girls in France and teachers in Germany denied their right to wear the scarf/ hijab?

Fida Says:

Wearing scarf is and seems to continue to be a controversial and a multifaceted issue raised often in public debate in Europe. Whereas the motivation to wear the scarf vary significantly for some Muslim women wear scarfs as their religious duty or in assertion of personal/political identity, and also sometimes are obliged by family or peer pressure, policies of member states range between complete prohibition of displaying any religious symbol (France) to complete freedom of students and teachers to wear any religious symbols (Belgium- in Flemish communities). In between are policies leaving decisions to schools or federal states or that prohibit only certain religious symbols while others are not considered as subject of regulation (Germany- Legislation to ban the scarf is introduced in Saarland and lower Saxony, yet christian and Jewish symbols are excluded from the ban). Policies seem to be reflected in public opinion, in a survey in 2005, 78% in France and 54% in Germany saw banning headscarf by Muslim women in public places including schools as a good idea compared to 29%in Great Britain.

Thank you Fida for your thoughtful reply. It seems there is much to learn about islamophobia in Europe. the different negative stereotypes especially in relation to women have to be apprached in informing ways as you do. but, to me connecting islamophobia to the EU foreign policy towards Palestine is confusing. how is that wearing a scarf or not affect foreign policy? i am confused trying to understand the connection. Palestine has always been a colonial question with or without islamophobia. can you explain?

As for Julia, Islamophobia not limited to women issues such as wearing scarf but also to Muslim situation in employment, education, housing as well as the manifestation of Islamophobia with focus on violence and crime is often tackled in Europe. However, Islamophobia in foreign policy is not. Therefore, it is helpful for the researcher to be both well informed on the issue studied and more focused. In my dissertation, I decided to examine the impact of Islamophobia on the EU boycott policy in 2006 given the sweeping victory of elected Hamas government by the occupied.
